The Role of NABL and IAGES Accreditation in Assaying Laboratories
25 May 2025
In the world of precious metal testing, BIS authorization is the minimum requirement for operating a hallmarking centre. But accreditation from bodies like NABL or IAGES represents a higher standard of demonstrated technical competence — one that separates laboratories that merely meet basic requirements from those that have been independently verified to operate at a level of excellence.
What Is Laboratory Accreditation?
Laboratory accreditation is a formal recognition by an authoritative body that a laboratory is competent to perform specific types of testing. The accreditation process evaluates the laboratory's technical competence (staff qualifications, testing methods), equipment calibration and traceability, quality management system, environmental controls, documentation and record-keeping, and proficiency testing results.
Accreditation is based on the international standard ISO/IEC 17025:2017 — "General Requirements for the Competence of Testing and Calibration Laboratories." This standard is recognised worldwide and provides a common framework for assessing laboratory quality.
NABL: National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories
NABL is India's premier accreditation body, established under the aegis of the Quality Council of India. NABL accreditation for a hallmarking centre means that the laboratory has been assessed by NABL-appointed technical assessors (experts in precious metal analysis), found to meet all requirements of ISO/IEC 17025, demonstrated competence in the specific testing methods used for gold and silver analysis (XRF spectrometry, fire assay), and committed to regular surveillance assessments (typically annual) to maintain accreditation.
NABL accreditation is a voluntary process — BIS authorization does not require it. Laboratories that pursue NABL accreditation are demonstrating a commitment to quality beyond the minimum standard.
IAGES: Indo-German-Argentine Expert System
IAGES provides accreditation for testing and calibration laboratories in alignment with international standards. The IAGES assessment process follows the same ISO/IEC 17025 framework and evaluates laboratories against equivalent criteria.
Varsha Bullion Hallmarking Centre holds IAGES accreditation, confirming that our laboratory operations, equipment calibration, staff competence, and quality management systems meet internationally recognised standards. This accreditation is a direct assurance to jewellers and consumers that our test results are accurate, reliable, and produced under controlled quality conditions.
Why Accreditation Matters
For jewellers: An accredited hallmarking centre provides greater confidence that test results are accurate. This means fewer false rejections (articles incorrectly failed) and fewer false passes (articles incorrectly approved) — both of which have business consequences.
For consumers: Accreditation adds a layer of independent verification to the hallmarking process. The BIS hallmark certifies purity; the accreditation certifies the competence of the laboratory that did the testing.
For the industry: Accredited laboratories serve as quality benchmarks, raising the overall standard of hallmarking across the country. They also facilitate international recognition of Indian assay results.
The Accreditation Process
Earning accreditation involves several stages:
- Application and documentation — The laboratory submits its quality manual, testing procedures, equipment records, and staff qualifications
- Document review — The accreditation body reviews the documentation for compliance with ISO 17025
- On-site assessment — Technical assessors visit the laboratory, observe testing processes, audit records, interview staff, and verify equipment calibration
- Proficiency testing — The laboratory analyses reference samples of known composition and must achieve results within acceptable accuracy ranges
- Corrective actions — Any non-conformities identified during assessment must be addressed
- Accreditation decision — If all requirements are met, accreditation is granted
- Surveillance — Regular follow-up assessments ensure continued compliance
BIS Authorization vs Accreditation
| Aspect | BIS Authorization | NABL/IAGES Accreditation |
|---|---|---|
| Required to operate | Yes | No (voluntary) |
| Assessed by | BIS | NABL/IAGES assessors |
| Standard | IS 15820 | ISO/IEC 17025 |
| Scope | Hallmarking operations | Laboratory competence |
| Renewal | Periodic | Annual surveillance |
| International recognition | India only | Global (ISO 17025) |
The Accreditation Advantage
Accreditation is not just a certificate — it represents a continuous commitment to quality. Accredited laboratories must maintain calibration schedules with documented traceability, participate regularly in proficiency testing, conduct internal audits of their quality management system, train staff continuously and maintain competence records, and respond to and close any non-conformities promptly.
This discipline creates a culture of quality that benefits every jeweller and consumer who relies on the laboratory's test results.
