How BIS Hallmarking Works
A documented six-step process — from article submission to HUID-stamped, hallmarked handover. Every step traceable, every result verifiable, every article accounted for.

Submit Articles
The jeweller arrives at the hallmarking centre, presents their BIS registration certificate, and submits the gold or silver articles along with the required documentation. Each submission is checked for completeness before acceptance.

Registration & Job Sheet
Each article is individually logged into the system, weighed on calibrated analytical balances, and a detailed job sheet is created. The job sheet records item descriptions, declared purity, weight, and jeweller details for full traceability.

Assaying & Testing
Articles undergo non-destructive testing via XRF spectrometry, delivering accurate elemental composition results in minutes. For cases requiring referee-grade precision, fire assay (cupellation) is used to determine purity to 0.01% accuracy.

Hallmarking & HUID
Articles that meet the declared purity standards are stamped with the official BIS hallmark and laser-engraved with a unique six-digit HUID (Hallmark Unique Identification Number) via the BIS HUID portal. This links each article to a permanent digital record.

Quality Check
Every hallmarked article goes through a final inspection to verify hallmark clarity, HUID legibility and accuracy, and overall article integrity. Articles that don't pass are re-processed before release.

Handover
Hallmarked articles are returned to the jeweller with complete documentation, including HUID records, assay certificates, and a summary job sheet. The entire process is typically completed within the same working day for standard lots.
FAQ
Common questions about the process.
For standard lots, the entire process — from submission to hallmarked handover — is typically completed within the same working day. Larger lots or articles requiring fire assay may take 1-2 working days.
No appointment is required. Walk-in submissions are accepted during working hours (Monday to Saturday, 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM). For very large lots, calling ahead is recommended so we can allocate sufficient capacity.
If an article does not meet the declared purity, it will not be hallmarked. You will receive a detailed assay report showing the actual purity reading. The article is returned to you without the BIS hallmark, and you can choose to have it re-submitted after refinement or accept the tested purity grade.
Yes. Every submission is assigned a unique job sheet number at the registration stage. You can enquire about your article status using this reference number at any time by contacting the centre.
