How to Choose a Reliable BIS-Authorized Hallmarking Centre

Choosing the right hallmarking centre is a critical decision for jewellers. The centre you work with affects the accuracy of purity testing, the turnaround time for your inventory, the safety of your articles during the testing process, and ultimately, the trust your customers place in your hallmarked products.

Verify BIS Authorization

The most fundamental requirement is that the centre must be BIS-authorized — licensed by the Bureau of Indian Standards to conduct assaying and hallmarking. BIS authorization means the centre has met the requirements of IS 15820 (the competence standard for hallmarking centres), including equipment specifications, staff qualifications, laboratory standards, and operational procedures.

You can verify a centre's BIS authorization through the BIS website, which maintains a directory of all licensed AHCs with their licence numbers, addresses, and scope of testing.

Look for NABL or IAGES Accreditation

Beyond BIS authorization, accreditation from NABL (National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories) or IAGES (Indo-German-Argentine Expert System for the Accreditation of Testing/Calibration Laboratories) provides additional assurance.

Accreditation means the laboratory has undergone a rigorous, independent assessment of its technical competence, equipment calibration, quality management systems, and staff proficiency. Accredited laboratories undergo regular surveillance audits to maintain their status.

Varsha Bullion Hallmarking Centre holds IAGES accreditation — a distinction that confirms our laboratory operations meet internationally recognised standards for analytical accuracy and quality management.

Evaluate Equipment and Capabilities

A well-equipped centre should have modern, calibrated XRF spectrometers for routine non-destructive testing, fire assay facilities for definitive purity analysis when required, precision balances for accurate weighing, and calibration standards traceable to national references.

Ask whether the centre can handle both gold and silver testing, and whether it has the capacity for the volume you expect to submit.

Assess Turnaround Time

Turnaround time directly impacts your business operations. Key questions to ask include what is the standard turnaround for routine lots, how turnaround changes during peak seasons, whether priority processing is available for urgent submissions, and whether the centre provides tracking or notification when articles are ready.

Consider Location and Convenience

Proximity matters, especially for jewellers who submit frequently. A centre close to your workshop or shop reduces transit time and logistics costs. Multiple locations provide flexibility. Varsha Bullion's two centres — Mumba Devi Road in the heart of Mumbai's jewellery district and Kamla Mills, Lower Parel — are positioned to serve jewellers across the city conveniently.

Check Track Record and Experience

Experience matters in assaying. A centre with a long operating history has encountered a wide range of article types, alloy compositions, and testing challenges. Ask about the centre's operating history and years of BIS authorization, daily and monthly processing volumes, experience with your specific type of jewellery (gold, silver, studded, plain), and rejection rates and how disputes are handled.

Safety and Security

Your articles represent significant value. The centre should have robust security measures including CCTV surveillance, secure storage for articles in process, documented chain-of-custody procedures, and insurance coverage.

Staff Expertise

The quality of testing depends on the expertise of the assayers. Look for centres with qualified metallurgists and chemists, staff trained in both XRF and fire assay techniques, and regular participation in BIS proficiency testing programmes.

Transparent Pricing

BIS prescribes maximum hallmarking charges. A reliable centre should provide clear, transparent pricing with no hidden charges, proper GST invoicing for ITC claims, and itemised charges for different service types.

The Long-Term Relationship

Choosing a hallmarking centre is not a one-time decision — it is the beginning of a long-term operational partnership. The right centre becomes an extension of your quality assurance process, providing reliable testing, consistent turnaround, and the credibility that comes with BIS-authorized, accredited certification on every article you sell.
