Understanding HUID

The Hallmark Unique Identification Number is a six-character alphanumeric code assigned to every hallmarked gold and silver article in India -- enabling complete traceability from assaying centre to consumer.

What is HUID?

HUID stands for Hallmark Unique Identification Number. It is a six-character alphanumeric code introduced by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) in July 2021 as part of the mandatory hallmarking framework for gold and silver jewellery.

The HUID replaces the older jeweller's identification mark. Unlike the previous system, where the mark only identified the jeweller, the HUID uniquely identifies each individual article -- making every hallmarked piece traceable from the hallmarking centre to the end consumer.

When an article passes purity testing (assaying) at a BIS-authorized hallmarking centre, BIS assigns a unique HUID through its online portal. This number is then physically stamped or laser-engraved on the article alongside the BIS logo and fineness number.

How HUID appears on jewellery

Every BIS-hallmarked article carries three components stamped or laser-engraved on the piece. Together, these marks provide verified proof of purity and traceability.

How to verify a HUID

Any consumer or jeweller can verify the authenticity of a HUID using one of three methods provided by BIS.

1

BIS Care App

Download the BIS Care app (available on iOS and Android). Enter the six-character HUID to instantly verify the article's hallmarking details.

Recommended method -- fastest and most detailed results.

2

BIS Website

Visit the official BIS online verification portal at bis.gov.in. Navigate to the hallmark verification section, enter the HUID.

Accessible from any device with a web browser.

3

SMS Verification

Send an SMS with the HUID to the designated BIS verification number. You will receive a reply confirming the article's hallmarking details.

No internet connection required.

What verification reveals

HUID verification shows the article's declared purity / fineness, the name and code of the BIS-authorized hallmarking centre that tested it, the date of hallmarking, and the type of article.

How our process ensures HUID compliance

As a BIS-authorized hallmarking centre, HUID assignment is an integral part of our hallmarking workflow. Every article that passes our assaying process receives a valid HUID through the official BIS portal.

Our workflow integrates directly with the BIS online system. After an article passes XRF spectrometry testing and meets the declared purity, our team submits the article details to the BIS portal, which generates the unique HUID.

A final quality check ensures the HUID is legible, accurate, and correctly matched to the article before it is released back to the jeweller with complete documentation.

1

Article passes assaying

Gold or silver article is tested via XRF spectrometry and confirmed to meet declared purity.

2

Details submitted to BIS portal

Article details, purity results, and jeweller information are submitted to the BIS online system.

3

HUID generated by BIS

BIS assigns a unique six-character HUID to the article through its portal.

4

Hallmark applied to article

The BIS logo, fineness number, and HUID are physically stamped or laser-engraved on the article.

5

Quality check and handover

Final inspection verifies hallmark clarity and HUID accuracy. Article is returned with complete documentation.
